Threes Everywhere
Sorry, Vinny. I didn't realize what you'd done there. It was a pretty frustrating weekend for me on CFB Pick 'Em. I would be sitting pretty right now if I'd just gone with all favorites, but I had to go for the killer blow and pick VT and Stanford to upset instead. I'm still pretty stunned that they both lost. Harbaugh let me down.

"hands in, big week on 3. 1,2,3...big week!" -- Stone

Indeed. Just when you're sitting on top and thinking nothing can go wrong, everything suddenly changes in the blink of an eye. The stock market, LSU's defense, LSU's running game, and me and Slut's leads in this parlay competition. Holy crap, we almost hit for the cycle on the parlays this week, only Stone had to go and pick against the Gophers. Why'd ya have to do a thing like that, Stone?

Week 5 Report
Nichol 77.50 ( = 60.00 + 17.5) 15 - 10 (6 - 0)
Truck 73.00 ( = 70.00 + 3) 14 - 6 (3 - 0)
Slut 61.90 ( = 61.90 + 0) 13 - 8 (2 - 2)
Vinny 61.16 ( = 55.56 + 5.5) 10 - 8 (4 - 0)
Gibbons 50.00 ( = 50.00 + 0) 13 - 13 (3 - 2)
Real 46.15 ( = 46.15 + 0) 12 - 14 (2 - 2)
Stone 46.15 ( = 46.15 + 0) 12 - 14 (4 - 1)

Total 54.94 (89 - 73) 24 - 7

35 total parlays with a return of 52 (i.e., +17 or +48.6%).

And I'll give the middle finger to Nicholson, who not only refused to write in both teams--or even the freaking spread--on his picks, thus making my task more time-consuming; but who also added insult to injury by using fucking Tulane and David Letterman's alma mater as two of his picks.

Nicholson's picks covered by 18.5 (Oklahoma State), 17.5 (Kansas State), 15 (Nebraska), 6 (Purdue), 2 (Tulane), and 1 (Ball State).

Vinny's picks covered by 17.5 (Kansas State), 2 (Notre Dame), 1 (Tennessee), and 1 (Louisville).

GEF's picks covered by 36.5 (Penn State), 18.5 (Oklahoma State), and 17 (Texas).

So it looks like I'm going to need more than 3 bonus points now. I'll be back, fuckers...

Texas isn't a true road team.
It's mid-October, and Wake Forest, Northwestern, Vandy, and UTEP, are still undefeated in conference play. How long will it last?
Week 5 Picks
1. Penn State -4.5 over WISCONSIN
2. Texas +7 over OKLAHOMA (Dallas, TX)
3. Oklahoma State +13.5 over MIZZOU

My theme of the week is road teams in high-profile games. I was thinking of throwing LSU in there, but I didn't want to face yall's wrath if it didn't work out, even with Tartt's fat ass out of the Gator lineup. Really, everything is set up for LSU to just absolutely destroy Florida in The Swamp by like 3 TDs or something, but I'm still afraid that Peveto will fuck it all up.

Except Minnesotans, asshole.
Well, I'm actually surprised people haven't been talking about this earlier, because it's an obvious target for political manipulation in the short-term. Thus, if I were a politician looking for publicity, I would definitely use rogue trading during the primaries to up my profile and get people to look at me as the front-runner.

Once you get to the general election, however, it gets much more difficult. As the author implies, affecting the market can run in the millions of dollars, even in its present small and illiquid form, once you get down to 2 candidates in the heat of election season. Also, by this time, few people are going to be affected by InTrade odds at this point, although, I must admit, if I were a candidate, I would still be tempted to use rogue traders in the 48 hours following crucial debates, in order to appear the popular winner and declare "victory."

Also, keep in mind that the article is from September 24, when McCain really did have about a 50% shot at winning (this was the date that the House Republicans voted down the first $700 billion rescue package).

The author is an obvious douchebag for not putting all this stuff into perspective. Remember, McCain was leading in electoral vote projections for quite some time leading up to that crappy week. And, of course, he still remains within striking distance to this very day. All he has to do is carry the states he's supposed to carry (NC, VA, OH, & FL), and then pull off victories in MO (50-48, Obama), CO (49-45 Obama), and NV (50-46 Obama), and he'll have 274 electoral votes and a ticket to the White House.

Really, I was thinking he needed to pull off an upset in one of the Great Lakes states (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, or Pennsylvania) to win, but for whatever reason, he seems to have slipped in all of those states. What can you say? Northern people suck.

I think you're a mean, mean a-hole who's very mean.
"fat FUPA" is kinda redundant

just sayin
Hooray for me! I'm 1-1 on even spreads so far this year in CFB Pick 'Em, and 4-0 when deciding to pick an upset. Four over par ain't bad.

As for Reesing, Mangino's fat FUPA, and the Jayhawks' 20-0 halftime deficit, I don't what the fuck all that was about.
Despite my high ranking in CFB Pick 'Em, I'm picking an upset this week when South Carolina travels to Ole Miss. I just refuse to believe that Darth Visor will allow his team to drop to 0-3 in the SEC by losing to a team coached by Houston Nutt. My faith in all that is holy about college football would be shaken to the ground if Spurrier allowed that to happen. Plus, Smelley is getting the start, and he really is their best quarterback.

Also, after surviving two overtimes in a row in NFL Survivor, I'm going with Carolina this weekend. The move makes me nervous, but it seems like the obvious play. It still doesn't feel right though. I still have a hard time taking the Panthers seriously as a professional athletic organization. They still remind me of an arena football team.

I Am Now Officially a Conspiracy Theorist
At this point, it's looking like super large institutional investors like CALPERS, TIAA-CREF, and especially PIMCO, led by Bill Gross, have been part of a money market conspiracy to freeze the short-term corporate debt markets on purpose in order to hold the U.S. government hostage to its demands to get taxpayers to buy up junk assets in the mortgage-backed securities market (or more accurately, the lack thereof). Hank Paulson seems to be in on the plan, delaying a Treasury money market insurance program until after the MBS rescue bill passed in Washington.

We know that Paulson has been acting like a dictator over at the U.S. Treasury Department, spooking markets on purpose to gain more power, but really, he may be doing this artificial jumping of the gun, so to speak, in order to save us from potential fuck-ups later down the road in the next administration.

By the way, I haven't heard these theories from anyone else as of yet, but it's the only thing that seems to make sense at this point. Commercial lending, despite all the hype, continues to stay at healthy levels, and the wider economy before last month had been mostly unaffected by any of this, besides of course, the massive lay-offs in the homebuilding and finance industries.

This is the craziest shit I've ever seen in my life. Fraud, fraud, fraud ... almost all of it among speculators in liberal urban America.
